harry potter and the lame-ass ending
It took me about seven, seven and a half hours to finish reading the last book. While Rowling's writing seems to have gotten smoother, even with the flagrant abuse of colons and semicolons (not that I can talk, myself), there was a certain something that kept popping up and pissing me off.
DEUS EX MACHINA, anyone?
I mean, Ron just happening to pick up an extra wand not long after Harry's gets broken? The seeming ease in which two or three teenage wizards manage to escape Death Eaters--who are, I've been led to believe, are remorseless and immoral killers who don't think twice about the Killing Curse unless it's going to get them into trouble with Voldemort.
Dude. Seriously.
I fangirlishly pride myself on having gotten two major plot points right, and half of a third; Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore, Harry being the last Horcrux, and Harry dying. Personally, I think Harry should have just stayed dead, but we can't always have our butterbeer and drink it, too. (Yeah, bad joke. Sorry.)
Man, I totally called that whole Horcrux thing once Dumbledore explained what they were to Harry in HBP. One of my fics, Passive I think I called it, was about that. Or would have been, if I'd ever finished it. And I know I sound like an absolutely pigheaded idiot, especially about what are arguably rather obvious 'plot twists.'
I wanted more on Draco and Snape. They were both neglected throughout the body of the story.
There was a line that had something about Draco screaming and clinging to Harry (when the RoR went up in flames). Since I'm so tired, by that time the words were starting to blur and I was losing track of the story...so when that sentence came out of nowhere, I fangirled so loudly I started choking violently. Then I had to explain to my dad what I thought I read and my love for Harry/Draco gayness, and then he got all grossed out. Because he likes HP too, but not the horribly sick and blasphemous things we fanfic writers tend to do to the characters.
I have to admit that I liked the final battle. But it should have ended there, not with the 'Nineteen Years Later' shit, and not just because I don't like Harry/Ginny.
And I can't think of anyone else to say that won't just devolve into mindless, sleep-deprived ranting, so...
No, seriously, don't click on the LJ-cut if you haven't finished the last Potter book.DEUS EX MACHINA, anyone?
