First time I went through West Texas I wasn't sure what to think. Coming from mountainous forest country myself, the seemingly endless plains and a sky that actually went from horizon to horizon was intimidating. I kept waiting for the aliens to take advantage of the complete lack of hiding places. Then there was a sunset and I couldn't remember why I'd been nervous.

I really think it's amazing that you were exposed to that sort of storytelling culture.
