"Apparently the Mercury Alchemist has taken a leave of absence."

Roy was so busy eyeing the stack of photos that had ominously appeared on the edge of his desk that it took him a moment to realize what Hughes was saying. "General Sephiroth? Why?"

A light shrug. "Haven't been able to figure that out yet. Lieutenant Fair has been running around Central like a madman, which suggests that this sabbatical wasn't exactly planned."

Roy leaned back in his chair and thoughtfully twirled a pen. Of the few generals that the military had, Sephiroth was the only State Alchemist, and also the youngest, younger even than Roy. Whispers of conspiracy had followed him for his entire career. "His annual assessment?"

"Except he wasn't scheduled to present anything for another several months. I'm thinking it has something to do with Hojo's death."

The pen in Roy's fingers immediately stilled. "That is…unexpected."

"Not when you consider how many people hated the man," Hughes said dryly, then added more seriously, "It was murder. The coroner claims it was a long blade, like a rapier – "

"Or the Masamune."

"Except no one's saying that little bit aloud. Sephiroth's got influence and not a little bit of worship from the people." General Sephiroth, a hero of the Ishbal Civil War, whose popularity with the people was surpassed only by one, more charismatic, Flame Alchemist.

"And the Fuhrer?"

"Just smiles and says he looks forward to seeing whatever Sephiroth's come up with for this year's research."

"Of course," Roy muttered, glancing past Hughes towards the closed door of his office. He could hear the murmurs of his men and what sounded like Havoc pleading with Hawkeye to put the gun down, please, it won't happen again, no really.

"The question now becomes the next course of action, knowing that one of the generals has left Central."

"The others aren't exactly blind. Hakuro, for example, will be especially careful of anyone looking to take advantage of the situation," Roy pointed out.

"Not everyone, however, has me on their side." Hughes' smile had an edge of dark amusement. He took off his glasses and started cleaning them with the hem of his shirt. "There's another bit of intrigue here," he said casually, and Roy arched a brow. "One of the men in Sephiroth's unit has disappeared. A kid, really, he's only sixteen or seventeen, just a specialist."

"And?"

"Well, there were some rumors not too long ago of inappropriate conduct, although people couldn't seem to decide if the conduct was on the part of the general or the lieutenant. A few seemed to think it was all three. Maybe the kid and the general decided to elope. Ah, the romance of it! Love against all odds!"

Roy rolled his eyes, unimpressed. Such rumors were almost expected and were rarely taken seriously without real evidence; he'd overheard enough of them concerning himself and Fullmetal since the kid had first become a State Alchemist. At twelve years old, no less.

"I know, you're thinking that every commanding officer faces those accusations at one time or another – "

"Maes," Roy broke in, "what was it that earned Sephiroth his rank as a State Alchemist?"

Hughes blinked. "I'm no alchemist, but from what I remember," and Hughes had a memory for details like no one else Roy knew, of course, "he was trying to find a way to power crystal spheres with latent energy that could be used by anyone, even non-alchemists. …You're thinking of Ed, aren't you?"

Roy started going through the papers on his desk, looking for the most recent intelligence concerning Fullmetal's whereabouts. If only the kid knew how right he was when he accused Roy of spying. "If Sephiroth was using stones and crystals in his research, I imagine he would've been tempted by the true Philosopher's Stone at some point. Perhaps he'd know something that could help Fullmetal in his search."

"And if Ed, in his usual way, blundered into discovering what was going on, that would just be a coincidence. And if it just so happened to have something to do with getting you a little closer to the top, well, stranger things have happened."

"Indeed."

Somewhere halfway across Amestris, Ed sneezed.

Your presentation feels like the darker, more consequential original series from years back vs. the current series showing on adultswim. I'm curious about what your opinions are on either of the series, or if your inspiration is from the manga?

[identity profile] jukeboxhound.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the most recent series (Brotherhood, right?) so I couldn't comment on it. I started watching the anime first only a couple years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't just another overexposed shonen series like Naruto or Bleach. (Sorry, Naruto, I love you but that's the truth.) And that the characters' actions did have consequences, and not all were positive? Awesome. And I've loved alchemy since childhood anyway, and the religious commentary, and the nature of what it means to be human - *fangirls*

I started reading the manga after seeing the anime, and I'm much more impressed. The characters are darker, the story more bleak, and Ed and Roy in particular have both managed to break my heart on several occasions. It's one of the few series nowadays I'd actually consider spending money to collect. ^^; About the only thing I have to complain about is that the differences in canon are going to drive me crazy.

...All my thoughts on yaoi said, since I'm currently in the middle of rereading the manga, I imagine that is what's going to influence this xover.

Yay I love this! I would do the fine wine comment again but it probably wouldn't have the same impact as last time so I'll just say awesome job!

Ha, thank you. :)

Honestly, I got about halfway through the first chapter before I gave up. I didn't like it at all. ^^; It was actually because I was writing Rufus in Eir's and I said to artimusdin LOL ROY AND RUFUS DOING POLITICS OVER TEA which led to SEPHIROTH AND ED NERDING OUT OVER SCIENCE and AL AND CLOUD BONDING OVER KITTENS/CHOCOBOS and OMG ZACK AND HUGHES WOULD BE TERRIFYING TOGETHER.

O_O B-but you HAVE to read it! *checks your forehead* sure you weren't sick, tired or grumpy when you read it? *runs for healer or first available white mage screaming 'Aeeeeerrriiiissss~!'*

Roy and Rufus are like long lost cousins, totally: that whole anti-hero smirky-smirk politics manipulation and looking daaaamn good while doing it- they're peas in a pod I tell you. >_>
Cadet Cloud would get on well with Al, maybe not so much with the older one, unless it was more of a protective way (Cloud would definatly make Al feel like a little kid without being mean- like Izumi-san's husband. :3)
After Ed beats the shit out of Hojo (no offense, I know you luff his character) then he and Seph will have even more to talk about!
If Zack and Hughes were on the same planet the universe would implode. with. awesomeness. 'Nuff said.

I am know going to spam you with TTDs quotes because you are missing out on a great story, missy! Here's an extract form one of the later chapters:
---
"You didn't miss me even a little bit?" Anko asked.

"I'll miss you as soon as you leave," Ed growled, struggling to free his wrists from her grasp. "Go the hell away," he added.

It wasn't much of a challenge to snatch the Alchemist from his genin guards. Kakashi was the only real threat, but he politely ignored her after she signaled him with her security code. The Uchiha brat's tantrum drew all the other brats' attention, and she snatched Edward before he had a chance to shout a warning. Borrowing the Alchemist wasn't all that hard, but she wasn't sure what to do with him now that she had him. She had a few hundred ideas of course, but no good way to choose among them.

An ANBU squad was circling, but they wouldn't move in unless she did something threatening-well, more threatening than dragging Edward behind a furniture store and pinning him against a wall. She supposed they'd rush over if there was too much blood and screaming.

"Where are you in such a hurry to get to anyway?" she asked. "You don't even have time to chat?"

"We've got nothing to talk about," he said.

"Of course we do," she said. "Our lunch date was cut short, and you didn't call to apologize. If we don't talk this out, our relationship can't move forward."

"Lunch date! " he demanded, his face flushing and the veins in his forehead standing out. " Are you referring to the incident last week in which you barged into the prison where I was being held without cause, slapped me around, and dumped that obscene substance all over me, before knocking me unconscious?" he bellowed.

She grinned at him. "Yeah. And you didn't even send me flowers after."

----
*stares at you intently*

Srsly, dude, do not want. Just different tastes. ^^

*sad face, sighs* mou... the Anko bit didn't intrigue you even a little? *shrugs* Well, I tried at least.

i c roy is still at his usual scheming ;D. nice shift here, to the FMA cast. i love the nods to FFVII canon with fine details, like the crystal spheres research (materia~! =D), the dynamics of SOLDIER (heh, seph's still a war hero and general here), hojo's experiment(ations), and our 0T3.

this always happens in FMA, but y didn't i c this coming, where roy's sending ed in? o god, i'm seeing things exploding into crazy good when the two sides meet and i CANNOT WAIT~! gaaaaah!fjdka;feowiafj;aa

thanks, as ever, for another wonderful addition <3

Holy crap the implications of materia and alchemy make my BRAIN a VERY HAPPY THING OF HAPPINESS. And thank you; whether it's an AU, crossover, or fusion, I try to parallel at least some of the events or trends of the involved fandoms so that it doesn't become just a mish-mash of random characters tossed together. If that makes sense? IDK. But thanks. :)
