The original movie went into it more than the series which deviated from the movie a fair bit. It was about the soul or the 'ghost' being what made a person real when they had so many cybernetic upgrades there was very little or none of their original body left, and whether an AI could come to possess a 'ghost'. That of course being a very simplistic summary ^_^;;, it really is a great movie.
