I've decided that my superpower would be the ability to use the CTRL+F function in real life.  You?

I may have to write a story as the final project for my scifi course.  I was considering religion vs. science issues in a steampunk setting (NOT THAT I'M PREDICTABLE OR ANYTHING), since most of the scifi I've come across personally tends more towards a cyberpunk-ish 'can robots be human' kind of thing.  (And because I need to do something with that NaNoWriMo bit I never finished.)

Made me wonder, what would you like to see more of in science fiction?  Steam or cyber or something else entirely?  Gender/sexuality?  More ethics?

If anyone's interested, Abney Park is a band that claims to be steampunk but really sounds like a darkwave-style Depeche Mode.  I'm of a mixed opinion, but hey.

In my scifi class we were discussing something for which I'd be interested in hearing other opinions.  You have a choice of two societies:

1. One society is the one we have now - human, flawed but changeable, subjective but constantly evolving.

2. The second society is one in which the government is composed of immortal beings (say true A.I.) that are superior to humans in every way, including morality; and in this society you could be guaranteed that these beings would be, and remain, completely benevolent and with human interests as their greatest priority.

Which would you choose?

Cut so my own opinion doesn't influence yours ~ )

I KNEW IT.
Cut for very minor spoiler for the Sherlock Holmes movie. )

My wingman [livejournal.com profile] canopy_walker  sent me this link, knowing as she does both my unrelenting dislike for Twilight and my sensitivity in regards to the characterization of women in various media.

Why not Team Bella?

Sometimes I hate my older brother for the stuff he gets me into.

Apparently this is a thought experiment meant to support the idea that humans are pretty terrible at abstract logic.  (Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the mathematician that came up with this, so if anyone knows I'd appreciate it.)

I have four cards.  On one side of them all is a letter; on the other side is a number.  I lay out all four and produce the following spread:

|  D  |  3  |  7  |  K  |

If a card has a 'D' on one side, then the other side will have a '3'.

How many cards will I need to turn over to prove the italicized statement true or false, and which one(s)?

The answer ~ )

Coming home from San Francisco the other day, we were on Winchester Blvd and passing Campbell.  I DO NOT THINK THESE TWO NAMES ARE COINCIDENCE.

Though it might have something to do with having the actual Winchester House nearby.  Old Lady Winchester was crazy, dude.  OR WAS SHE?

From Wiki:

"Modifying the gravity causes different flame types.[3] The common distribution of a flame under normal gravity conditions depends on convection, as soot tends to rise to the top of a general flame, as in a candle in normal gravity conditions, making it yellow. In micro gravity or zero gravity, such as an environment in outer space, convection no longer occurs, and the flame becomes spherical, with a tendency to become more blue and more efficient (although it may go out if not moved steadily, as the CO2 from combustion does not disperse as readily in micro gravity, and tends to smother the flame)."

And a pic of this fucking awesome diffusion flame.

This is why being an Aries is FUCKING BRILLIANT, and not just because we have a mobile suit named after us.  Cardinal fire sun-signs  and Flame Alchemy FTW.  This means, of course, an FMA fic set in space.  I would also like to point out that among the four classical elements, fire is the only one due to constant and dynamic chemical reaction and not physical matter, which automatically makes it that much more interesting.

*playing with a lighter*

Shuddup, I like fire.

I think it's funny that medieval theologians considered Hell to be a very cold place and not fiery at all.  As Brad Pitt once said, FUCKING DANTE. <3

Was browsing the [livejournal.com profile] weepingcock  community when I should've been writing my essay ("Satan as the purveyor of self-knowledge in 'Paradise Lost', dear god shoot me now...) and found this lovely bit:

schreckschraube: "Considering that we have about 3 billion women on this planet... if only we knew the average weight of a clit, we could calculate if all clits in this world together would make 5000 tons!"

norectangulars: "
It depends how you anatomically define the clit - if it's just the "bud", then probably about 5grams. But, according to some random source that it probably not reliable and I can't remember what it is, there's some kind of underlying structure that stretches further into the body. Although, that might just be a bunch of nerves, which totally shouldn't count.

This is never something I ever thought I'd say/type..."

hajari: "5g x 3x10^9 = 1.5x10^10 grams, or 15000 metric tonnes... (I think that's right, my maths skills are a bit rusty)"

The earth is currently supporting an estimated 15,000 tons in clits.  (More, really, since it's later shown that the clit is more than just an odd little nubbin.)

...I know some lesbians who're going to be thrilled to hear that.
