but suddenly doing a 180 because of 'testosterone' or 'maternal instinct' is what pisses me off about that trope. Some changes, yes, but the core personality remains the same.
Pretty much this. Though at the same time, gender identity plays a large role in our social and self identities, so in the right hands it could be really interesting.
