You know, I'm really feeling the lack of love here, people.

SR-71—“Tomorrow”

(Seto/Yugi)

For so long Seto had labored under Gozaburo’s lessons that when he woke up early one morning and realized that he was still doing so when the man had been dead for years, he felt lost.  As though life had dropped him off and kept moving without him.  Mokuba was a teenager with a busy social life and even a girlfriend, and Kaiba Corp had proven capable of running itself smoothly in his periodic absences.  When Mokuba didn’t need his watchful big brother and the company was able to stand on its own two feet while still raking in the gaming profits…

Hard-won discipline was the only thing keeping him from panicking.  Don’t be ridiculous, he told himself.  Panicking over an abstract?  He was starting to sound like Yugi.  Soon he would want to start talking about how he felt and baking cookies or some such shit—

“I can hear you sneering from here,” Yugi’s soft voice commented dryly in the darkness.  A gentle hand on his shoulder made Seto twitch, and then he snarled at himself for not controlling the reflex.

“Go back to sleep,” Seto said shortly.  The sheets behind him rustled, and he only barely managed to refrain from growling when arms wrapped around his waist and Yugi rested his head against the taller boy’s back.

“I will,” said Yugi agreeably.  Seto waited with barbed words on his tongue for the usual Do you want to talk about it? bullshit, but the silence in the bedroom stretched on.  Yugi wasn’t asleep, his breathing wasn’t level enough for that, but when there was no inquisition Seto couldn’t help relaxing—very slowly—into the steady warmth behind him.

Within Temptation—“Say My Name”

(Seto/Yami)

When he was younger, Seto had read the words ‘A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet’ and had promptly chucked the book across the room.  Ten years old and he already knew that it was saccharine bullshit to reassure people who couldn’t accept reality.

A name was everything.  Old legends claimed that knowing the name of a demon would let you control it.  Seto had known the demons of taking on the Kaiba name long before he challenged Gozaburo to that fucking chess game—now he ruled the gaming industry with cutting-edge technology and ruthlessness, and Mokuba never had to worry about bullies again.

Yami had understood Seto better than anyone else.  Understood the burden of a name…and the lack of one.

Neither knew how to express himself except through sex or violence, so when Seto fucked Yami and Yami raked his nails down a scarred back, Seto would murmur Atemu.  Yami would hiss Seto—not Kaiba, not the young corporate president renowned for caring about nothing but Mokuba and his dragons, but Seto, the young man with the sincere inability to let go of his pride or his broken vision of the world.

And Yami (Atemu) would be forced to remember that he wasn’t just a shadow in a kid’s puzzle.

The Boondock Saints Soundtrack—“The Speech”

(Seto/Yugi)

People often asked Yugi what the hell he saw in someone like Kaiba.  Yugi would just smile, because he knew they would never understand.  No one else ever seemed to see the fierce pride and fiercer sense of honor worthy of the older boy’s beloved dragons.

Dragons hoarded treasure.  Craved it.  Protected it as long as they could draw breath.  Yugi was honored that he would become such a dragon’s treasure and so he did everything in his power to make himself worthy of that honor.

(Not in the least, making sure the stubborn creature remembered to eat before going to work.)

E Nomine—“Draculs Bluthochzeit”

(Seto/Yami/Yugi)

Yugi was the one that kept Seto’s ferocity and Yami’s cruelty from colliding into a self-destructive explosion.  But sometimes they retreated to the shadows where the light couldn’t follow and unleashed the forcibly restrained violence, the anger, the fear—a broken dragon and a nameless pharaoh, cruel irony in that one refused to accept his past life and the other was still trapped in it.

Guano Apes—“Underwear”

(Seto/Yugi)

This was one of those occasions in which Seto wondered whether allowing Yugi into the Kaiba brothers’ small family had really been a good idea.

“Do I want to know?” he asked flatly.  Yugi didn’t even have the good sense to look repentant; instead he shared a wide grin with Mokuba from under the hem of the boxers falling over one purple eye.

“Nope,” they chimed together cheerfully.  Seto did not look at the odd mess of clothes (mostly boxers), paint (mostly sparkly blue) and glitter (all sparkly), and glue-covered googly-eyes (was that sock staring at him?) scattered over the living room.

“…I’ll be in my office,” he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose.
