I really admire your ability to take a step back and view the characters exactly as they should be.
Like someone already said, Hojo is often cast as a very flat character who is merely insane or evil for the sake of it- because people cannot get their head's around someone who is as heartless as he is. Yes, sadistic to a point but in many ways very similar to a young child pouring salt on a slug because they want to see what happens: Hojo doesn't understand human pain, attachments or emotion the way other people do, therefore he fills this void (if he even realises it exists) by analysing life instead, without remorse or attachment to his subjects.
I thought I had started to get into Hojo's character and had begun to write him well, I completely revise this opinion- excuse me whilst I revise 7000 words of obsolete character interaction. -_-
Also, upon reflection, it may not have been the best idea to read this just after I'd finished a ZxC story just under 30 chapters long that just so happens to end at the Nibelheim confrontation. It's like this is the continuation... *Sniffle* So much for my canon denial.
