updating the vinyls

Having been introduced to big bangs through the SPN fandom, I've been mulling over a soundtrack for my Cap/IM bang. Except I'd like some input.
The fic itself deals with Extremis and sort of-transhumanism, so I'm leaning towards an industrial/synth/tech/sampling feel. Unfortunately, for all that I like to think I have something for everything, my default tends to run towards grunge, metal, alt rock, or downtempo (if I'm actually listening) or movie soundtracks (for when I just need background noise). I've been vaguely considering songs from artists like Depeche Mode, Neuroticfish, Tryad, and Infected Mushroom, and I want to keep to a thematic and lyrical cohesiveness rather than carelessly throw together completely different genres, but I feel woefully underprepared. The last time I was really into anything resembling industrial, I was an even scrawnier, self-obsessed teenage goth that played Skinny Puppy and Marilyn Manson on repeat. (I also have a tendency to listen to the same few songs obsessively for weeks and then forget all about them for several years before stumbling across old music files or actual mix CDs again and IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS IN JULY.)

So, any recommendations for songs or artists along the lines of industrial, techno, dubstep, and/or darkwave (and maaaaaybe trip-hop, idk)? Also willing to take differing opinions or ideas, bawwww.
ETA: Political shit and whatever is awesome, but I'd like to avoid anything racially charged. As much as I love Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird's cover of "Black Steel," a quick consult with
chofi reaffirmed my opinion that doing so for a story featuring a rich white guy would be...somewhat disingenuous.

Date: 2012-09-12 04:42 am (UTC)Techno/synth and Alternative with synth elements:
Awolnation, The Bravery, Broken Bells, Eurythmics, Goldfish, Goldfrapp, Infected Mushroom, Ladytron, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker
Techno/Dubstep/Remixes:
Aventures of Dwayne & Brand0, Approaching Nirvana, Chrispy, Deadmau5, Devo, Kid Cudi, Ferry Corsten, Jean Michel Jarre, Moby, The Prodigy, Skrillex, Plenta Kill, VNV Nation
I'm not so good with the rap, hip or trip-hop stuff.
What I usually do is get on my P2P program and stick in a keyword or two, and see if any of the results look interesting. Ot I could zip some of my favourites into a file and post it for you to dl...

I figure poking around with the radios and YouTube will also yield like artists and give me more of a reason to get a second external drive. :D Thank you so much.

Date: 2012-10-17 05:16 pm (UTC)In the trip-hop genre I always turn to Tricky, Massive Attack, and Morcheeba, Portishead, etc...
Sneaker Pimps has a few goodies like 'Blood Sport' and 'Sick'.
IAMX has 'Your Joy Is My Low' and 'Kiss and Swallow'.
Industrial - I always liked Nine Inch Nails style. I really enjoy his "With Teeth" album. also Rammstein....
Try Bassnectar for dubstep.
....So much music and I can't remember them off the top of my head. :(

Date: 2012-11-14 02:33 am (UTC)Tricky, Massive Attack, and Portishead are all <3, though Morcheeba gets boring for me sometimes. Hooverphonic is another in that general vein.
I don't know this IAMX or Bassnectar, which means I'll need to look into them.
Thank you for your recs - you can never have too many musical options. :D
