resorting to reading pornfic between seminars/rituals

  1. Got an apartment downtown with Boyfriend and another friend and we're three blocks from my fave coffee shop, you can see my priorities here.  Also a ten minute walk from the wharf with all the hacking of sea lions and the pervasive smell of ocean that creeps through your window at night.

  2. (Which reminds me, [livejournal.com profile] fateofshadow, I keep meaning to send you more saltwater taffy.  Goddamn international shipping costs.)

  3. Stealing sporadic Internet from various coffee shops and the community center across the street, but since it is so sporadic I've done more actual reading of books in the last two weeks than the last several months.  Somehow I fail to regret this.

  4. Discovered I still have a problem with spending grocery money on books.  Exacerbated by now living four blocks from the nearest bookstore.

  5. OH SHIT I'm going to be representing the 'sky' realm in the upcoming three-realm-Celtic-inspired Samhain ritual, which means ritual performance!  In public!  In front of other people!  With the Morrigan!  Why the fuck did I volunteer for this!

  6. Found a leather jacket for ten bucks today.  Booya.

  7. Still no full-time job AHAHA who needs to eat

  8. The Assassin's Creed series is giving me feelings.

  9. Writing fic, what does that mean.

I often get the question: When are you going to update/finish Eir's Tomorrow?  And the answer is: I don't know, because honestly I'm kind of burned out on the FF7 fandom for the first time in, what, seven years of poking at it, haven't read other people's fic for it in like four or five years anyway, and I just.  It isn't fun writing it anymore? I'll finish it eventually just because I've spent so much time on it by now that it'd be stupid to let that all go to waste, and there are only like one chapter + epilogue left, but there you go.

Psych medication hasn't been helping my ~creative drive~ either.  :(

Today's Total Birthday Haul

Avengers Assemble #1
Marvel Adventures: Iron Man vol.3
Locke & Key vol.1
Hellblazer vol.1
The Invincible Iron Man vol.8
Tank Girl vol.1
The Sandman vol.10

I'm on first name terms with everyone who works at/owns the comic store by now, by the way.

And since St Patrick's Day is just three days beforehand, [livejournal.com profile] canopy_walker and I raided my dad's 'Irish' cookbook and likely made my immigrant ancestors roll in their graves.

I feel like I'm hardly ever online anymore and I'm not sure what to think of this.
  • Used my student loans to get a car, then get a permit, learn to drive, and get my license within the span of about three weeks because I'm just that talented.  This means I'm almost never home anymore (but how can you blame me when I live ten minutes from the beach and ten minutes from the mountains in the other direction, I mean really).
  • I got a job as an aide to an elementary school teacher who's gone blind the last few years - why anyone thought I'd be a good role model for our future generation I have no idea, but she seems happy with my performance already, so.
  • Started participating and volunteering with a local eclectic spiritual organization, which means an atheist-recently-turned-reluctant-sort-of-agnostic is cavorting about in witchcraft and sin.  I should note that pagans are damn good cooks and store-bought pumpkin pies just won't cut it anymore.
  • No more schooling means no more having to read about other people's religions in both anthropological and philosophical senses and much more time for personal existential crises.  I figure if Cloud is allowed to have one every other month or so, then I can have one or two myself, damnit.
  • The fact that I don't have to read anymore means such texts are suddenly that much more appealing.  Imagine, reading something for fun that isn't fanfiction, what is this nonsense.
  • Being back in my home country means being back with old and close friends.  :D
  • November is usually my favorite month.  Just sayin'.
Long story short, I have a social life to compound my laziness in writing fic, though I still add a few more paragraphs to Eir's every other day or so.  I'm still not sure how this happened.

Also got confirmation back from the University of Edinburgh that I did indeed pass, so I can legit go around being a dick and bragging that I'm 23 and have a European master's, albeit in a discipline that's rather useless outside of teaching, preaching, or interfaith diplomacy.  \o/

Student debt, pshaw.  Seriously, though, coming from a less-than-financially-blessed background has made me realize just how fucking lucky I am, particularly in the current world that's led to the necessity of movements like #Occupy Wall Street.

That's right. Green d4 earrings, made by our very own [info]arin_rowan.

Well, I only have the one now because I'm an idiot and wore regular earrings in gauged holes without a rubber stop on the end BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.  The point is that you need to check out her store.  This lady is quick and does quality stuff, and since this is like her job, you're also supporting not only an independent craftsperson but also a friend.  :D

I have a fair amount of manga and doujinshi that have been sitting on my shelves for a good six years by now, largely untouched or changed except for the occasional nostalgic reread.  I was thinking about finally selling most, if not all, of it.

And I wanted to know if anyone would have an interest or would know the best way to go about this sort of thing.

Banana-flavored condoms as tools of behavioral conditioning. Eat that, Pavlov. )

Also, I know I've been posting a lot these last few weeks.  This is because: one, I talk a lot anyway no seriously it's pretty amazing sometimes, and two, because my dissertation is wringing the life out of me but I don't feel like reading much escapism!fic and I feel guilty trying to write it and gah, I'm sure this all makes sense somewhere.  And I know how I want to end Eir's Tomorrow now except I'm afraid of disappointing people and so I intimidate myself, which means I put off writing and I know that irritates people because I get messages asking what the hold up is, and then I feel guilty all over again and it's all a VICIOUS CYCLE of VICIOUSNESS.  And it's been like three years since I actually participated in this fandom outside writing my own fic and I don't know what's going on anymore Out There and I'm all like DDD:    WHY NO I'M NOT NEUROTIC WHY WOULD YOU EVEN ASK.

Normally I'd do something spiffy like provide links to history and ~lore~ and shit, but this time y'all will have to make do with general lovey-ness.  ♥

I have a lot of work from now until August.  I'm considering dropping out of the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang  for this year, which breaks my heart because damnit I was looking forward to it.  I am disappoint.

Also, currently no Internet at home, which means resorting to long hours in a cafe buying tea to justify my extended presence.  I've been acculturated.  Long story short, extended absences from LJ broken up by irregular splurging on my f-list I just have no self-control in avoiding fandom, so whatever.  There have been some lovely comments left by people that have made me warm and fuzzy inside, and I promise to respond when I'm able to.

I can't wait for this year to be done.

In the meantime, have some art thing. )

Against all expectation and despite a lukewarm premiere, SPN's sixth season is turning out fucking epic.  (Haters to the left, tyvm.)  I don't think I've ever gotten physically nauseous with excitement and OMG SPECULATION over a television show before.

Also, people made me arts and they're awesome.  (You may notice a theme here.)

[livejournal.com profile] chofi  said that the tail in the latter pic made her think naughty things a la Temptation, so of course now it's all I can think about.  Should make the paper on Lithuanian charms on which I'm meant to be working rather interesting.  (C'mon, those theology students need a little humor in their gospels.)

I R GENIUS.

I HAVE FIGURED OUT WHY MY POSTS WEREN'T SHOWING UP ON FLISTS, though oddly enough it wasn't because I'd missed some of the settings or anything.  Anyway, problem should be resolved.  The previous Sticky Post with links to all my fics and fic recs will now be added to the side menu, fyi.

My study-abroad program is having a photo contest and I figured, hey, why not.  The category is 'Off the Beaten Path,' and I tried to choose pics that reflect some important aspect of Ireland.

Of these four, which two would you choose?

Am I your charm, or am I just bad luck ~ )
jukeboxhound_backup: (stock - cliffs of moher.)
My final research project for my Anthro of Religion class is a comparison of how Imbolc is celebrated in the modern day: the neo-pagan conception, the Irish Catholic equivalent of St Brighid's Day, and how the two are similar or dissimilar in their customs.  Community Seed is a local pagan organization that caters to a wide variety of paths; I've celebrated a few Sabbats with them in the past and plan on attending their Imbolc ritual tomorrow.  While living in Ireland, also, I realized just how important St Brighid's Day - nearly unheard of in America, so far as I know - was to the Irish Catholic.

My point is - is there anyone willing to give testimony about their own experiences or customs concerning Imbolc or St Brighid's Day?  Testimony is always valuable and might point out something I would've otherwise missed.  If you're willing, would you comment or PM or email me?

(I think it's also valuable to stress that I've been involved in both these traditions at one point or another and have been atheist for some years now, so I don't feel disposed towards favoring one over the other.  It's my intent to be as objective as possible.)
jukeboxhound_backup: (stock - pissy pumpkin.)
I fear that my Anthropology of Religion class is rather more infuriating than educational.  Even given the bias of my having been (officially) in a single discipline for four years, these class discussions are wishy-washy nonsense with apparently little to do with logic or analysis and rife with the kinds of assumptions for which any half-decent philosophy professor would fail a student.  Granted, anthropology is a subject that by definition is more concerned with cultural evidence, not potentially biased judgment, but...seriously, logic shouldn't be anathema.  *violent twitch*

dude.

Though it has a few awkward phrases, on the whole I absolutely adore this PWP. It's only by sheer luck I found it again. (That, and I don't have the security of a high school computer lab keeping me away from it anymore, bwahaha).

Has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, but considering this is the time of year for more racist colonial-America fics than ever, I figure that's a good thing. Happy holidays. :)

On unrelated matters:
- Have started a slow, very minor revision of Eir's Tomorrow, just to minimize some of the grammatical mistakes and awkwardness that dina and I missed the first time around. Nothing should change plot-wise, so no rereading necessary at all. It's mostly just to placate my nitpicky head.

And has anyone ever seen that show 'Hoarders'? )
