There are few genres in which I haven't found something I liked (this does not, as people usually expect, include rap, hip-hop, or country), so, y'know, if you've got any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.  /begging

and while i don't remember what happened in a way that can be coherently explained, i woke up for the first time in literally years actually fangirling about cloud and sephiroth and the bittersweet fuckery between them, oh my god, please let this mean my complete burnout on that fandom isn't actually complete anymore.

also, [livejournal.com profile] arin_rowan, i've been getting fuckloads of compliments on my d20 earrings at this place full of nerds and pagans, so hopefully you'll get a few more customers at your lovely etsy.  :D :D :D

For The Boatman, Crossed by Death.

I have a tendency to take on ambitious projects that may or may not betray my baseline level of pretension but WHATEVER, OKAY, I DO WHAT I WANT, THOR.  So in lieu of ALL the religion and mythos that I want in Dishonored, which is honestly an impossible level to reach because there will NEVER BE ENOUGH EVER, I thought I'd write my own.  Which, again, quite possibly very pretentious, but that just means I was right all along and Pottermore should've put me in Ravenclaw.

  • A lot of this was based off info from the Dishonored Wiki, particularly the way the individual Isles relate to real-world nations.  More of it was inspired by Peter Jeans' Seafaring Lore and Legend, which I admit I bought purely because of this goddamn game.  I don't have the book on me because Boyfriend is borrowing it, and I can't cite specifics off the top of my head, but if you have any questions let me know and I will happily get back to you.

  • A couple unnamed characters come from the cultist scribblings in the Knife of Dunwall DLC.

  • I'm going to wait for the Brigmore Witches DLC before attempting anything about them; I figure enough of this is going to get Jossed as it is.

Simultaneous over-analysis and broad generalizations, go ~ )

Lately I've been linking fic to AO3 rather than crossposting it to LJ.  I was wondering: should I go back to crossposting, or is the AO3 linking all right?

In which I am once again struck by how much I miss hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] chofi, [livejournal.com profile] artimusdin, [livejournal.com profile] arin_rowan, and [livejournal.com profile] tir_synni, and how much I miss marathoning SPN and generally being dorks with [livejournal.com profile] fateofshadow.

i love you so much
jukeboxhound_backup: (ff7 - cloud [stunned].)
Writing fic the other day, it occurred to me that Sephiroth calls Cloud by his first name while all ~Jenova'd~ but would've used "Strife" (or Private Strife, Cadet Strife, whatever) when sane.  Like, during his puppet mindfuckery it'd be a perversion of the intimacy that comes with using a personal name, but while he's actually capable of human interaction there'd be distance with the use of the surname Strife and most likely an awareness of their differences in authority.

Crazy-->fucked-up version of intimacy
Sane-->surnames and more professional distance

I think there's something sad and ironic in all this.

i just found this interesting in terms of, well, intimacy and its issues, idk

Having been introduced to big bangs through the SPN fandom, I've been mulling over a soundtrack for my Cap/IM bang.  Except I'd like some input.

The fic itself deals with Extremis and sort of-transhumanism, so I'm leaning towards an industrial/synth/tech/sampling feel.  Unfortunately, for all that I like to think I have something for everything, my default tends to run towards grunge, metal, alt rock, or downtempo (if I'm actually listening) or movie soundtracks (for when I just need background noise).  I've been vaguely considering songs from artists like Depeche Mode, Neuroticfish, Tryad, and Infected Mushroom, and I want to keep to a thematic and lyrical cohesiveness rather than carelessly throw together completely different genres, but I feel woefully underprepared.  The last time I was really into anything resembling industrial, I was an even scrawnier, self-obsessed teenage goth that played Skinny Puppy and Marilyn Manson on repeat.  (I also have a tendency to listen to the same few songs obsessively for weeks and then forget all about them for several years before stumbling across old music files or actual mix CDs again and IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS IN JULY.)

So, any recommendations for songs or artists along the lines of industrial, techno, dubstep, and/or darkwave (and maaaaaybe trip-hop, idk)?  Also willing to take differing opinions or ideas, bawwww.

ETA: Political shit and whatever is awesome, but I'd like to avoid anything racially charged.  As much as I love Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird's cover of "Black Steel," a quick consult with [livejournal.com profile] chofi reaffirmed my opinion that doing so for a story featuring a rich white guy would be...somewhat disingenuous.

ladies and gentlemen

for the first time ever

i have managed to meet a big bang deadline

And even then it probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't spilled yakisoba all over my bag in NYC, which happened to have been carrying one of [livejournal.com profile] tir_synni's notebooks, and I was thus consumed by soul-sucking guilt and I promised I'd finish this thing.  (For the record, no Unexpected Side-effects was lost in the process, and [livejournal.com profile] arin_rowan made it better with some sparkly FFVII stickers she found and shared.  :DDD  And now I'm missing them and chofi and [livejournal.com profile] artimusdin and The Strand's inventory of $5 hardcover comic collections.)

anyway

So, uh, for anyone doing the [livejournal.com profile] femmeslash_bang: where the hell is the rough draft supposed to be sent?  Mods haven't responded and there hasn't been any activity in the comm.  If it's already dead then I'll be rather...disgruntled.
jukeboxhound_backup: (people - fuck you.)
okay self
it's saturday
no work or coordinating events or pressing obligations
you have to write at least six thousand words by tonight in order to follow the femmeslash_bang's rules
WE CAN DO THIS :DDD
oh hey what's this
oh no worries it's just the laptop with my fic on it crashing from a wave of malware

i'll just go make some coffee
and bash my head into a wall i guess

Rough drafts for the [livejournal.com profile] femmeslash_bang are due on Saturday.  Just thought I'd share the moment of WAIT WHAT HOW IS IT THAT TIME ALREADY GODDAMN.  In the spirit of rough drafts spellcheck proofreading editing, a meme nicked from around LJ:

What do people generally expect from my writing?

positive and/or negative
i ask mostly in the interest of wanting to continually improve my writing
but pure curiosity is poking around in the corners too

I feel like I'm hardly ever online anymore and I'm not sure what to think of this.
  • Used my student loans to get a car, then get a permit, learn to drive, and get my license within the span of about three weeks because I'm just that talented.  This means I'm almost never home anymore (but how can you blame me when I live ten minutes from the beach and ten minutes from the mountains in the other direction, I mean really).
  • I got a job as an aide to an elementary school teacher who's gone blind the last few years - why anyone thought I'd be a good role model for our future generation I have no idea, but she seems happy with my performance already, so.
  • Started participating and volunteering with a local eclectic spiritual organization, which means an atheist-recently-turned-reluctant-sort-of-agnostic is cavorting about in witchcraft and sin.  I should note that pagans are damn good cooks and store-bought pumpkin pies just won't cut it anymore.
  • No more schooling means no more having to read about other people's religions in both anthropological and philosophical senses and much more time for personal existential crises.  I figure if Cloud is allowed to have one every other month or so, then I can have one or two myself, damnit.
  • The fact that I don't have to read anymore means such texts are suddenly that much more appealing.  Imagine, reading something for fun that isn't fanfiction, what is this nonsense.
  • Being back in my home country means being back with old and close friends.  :D
  • November is usually my favorite month.  Just sayin'.
Long story short, I have a social life to compound my laziness in writing fic, though I still add a few more paragraphs to Eir's every other day or so.  I'm still not sure how this happened.

Also got confirmation back from the University of Edinburgh that I did indeed pass, so I can legit go around being a dick and bragging that I'm 23 and have a European master's, albeit in a discipline that's rather useless outside of teaching, preaching, or interfaith diplomacy.  \o/

Student debt, pshaw.  Seriously, though, coming from a less-than-financially-blessed background has made me realize just how fucking lucky I am, particularly in the current world that's led to the necessity of movements like #Occupy Wall Street.

Yesterday afternoon.

Phone: *ringing*
Sister: Hello?
Me: Hey, it's me, just calling to see how you're doing.
Sister: I'm good, how're you?
Me: I have to use the restroom, but I'm otherwise fine.
Sister: Then why don't you go?
Me: I'm in the middle of a graveyard. That might be kind of awkward.
Sister: ...What are you doing in the middle of a graveyard?
Me: What wouldn't I be doing in the middle of a graveyard.

Own car + license + twisting mountainous roads + autumn turning + music = almost never being home anymore. No regrets.

Any recs for horror or thriller movies? I've seen a lot of the classics and enough B-grade ones that I should probably demand a refund for all those hours of my life, but I know I've missed a few and I'm always on the lookout for more.

In other news, say hello to The Occult Miscellany, which is my latest excuse to cover my dad's coffee table with the sort of books that would've gotten me burned at the stake.

And happy not-yet Halloween/Samhain/etc. >:D

jukeboxhound_backup: (LGBT - pride flag.)
I signed up. Because I could. Maybe I'll actually finish it, too.

[livejournal.com profile] femmeslash_bang

It's pan-fandom and welcomes original fiction, so maybe that's another incentive to work on the sad lack of femmeslash. Author sign-ups close October 1st and artists claim a story on December 15th. It's all due on February 10th, and the whole thing goes live on February 14th.

DO IT, GUYS.  Final Fantasy needs more of this, but you didn't hear it from me.

ETA: Also, she doesn't know it, but I wouldn't be trying this out if [livejournal.com profile] chofi hadn't provided such an amazing prompt on the yuri_challenge comm some months ago.  She's brilliant like that.

(In other news, I gave in once again to the black hole that is Tumblr. Mostly fandom-related stuff and whatever stupid shit makes me laugh, with random music and the occasional bits of sexuality and/or politics. After all, why not.)

Final Fantasy X HD remake revealed for Vita and PS3

"Sony’s press conference keeps getting better, with Square-Enix taking the stage with some big news that’s sure to excite some gamers while making others fuming mad. No, they didn’t finally show off that Final Fantasy VII remake you’ve been waiting for – actually, if you’re one of the many who has been clamoring for that, you might want to sit down. Instead of remaking VII, Square-Enix is giving Final Fantasy X the HD treatment, remaking it for both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita."

Fuck. Yes.

Guys.  Guys.  Check this shit out:

That's right. Green d4 earrings, made by our very own [info]arin_rowan.

Well, I only have the one now because I'm an idiot and wore regular earrings in gauged holes without a rubber stop on the end BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.  The point is that you need to check out her store.  This lady is quick and does quality stuff, and since this is like her job, you're also supporting not only an independent craftsperson but also a friend.  :D

I have determined that colds are God's way of telling us to sit the fuck down and play more video games.
